                     Intrinsically Safe Geophones

Intrinsically safe geophones are essential tools in any coal mine located seismic monitoring exercise. For example;

The intrinsically safe geophone has been developed by the CSIRO Exploration and Mining for the purpose of microseismic research in coal mines.

Manufactured by Holville Pty Limited the intrinsically safe seismic geophones are intended for monitoring seismic activity in a Group 1 Zone 0 hazardous area. The uniaxial geophone comprises one inductive coil and the triaxial geophone comprises 3 inductive coils, fully encapsulated with safety components. The signal generated by the movement of the respective coils relative to the case axis is read by non-specified equipment in the safe area via a cable terminated in a MTL7761Pac zener safety barrier.

In-line cable connectors can be used to make the handling of long cable lengths more convenient.  The geophone is a passive instrument and requires a source of seismic activity, such as the cutter drum on a mining machine, to produce an electrical signal.

The geophones are orientated to be either roof or floor mount and have been certified to IEC 60079-0:2004 and IEC 60079-11:2006.

  • Highwall span and stability monitoring
